We are engaged in a new paradigm for the teaching and research of design in the 21st century. Located within the nation's largest and most innovative university, and set in the context of the country's most rapidly urbanizing metropolis, The Design School offers degrees in architecture, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design, and visual communication (graphic) design. Our school brings together all of these design disciplines, working together to create a new vision of how we educate the next generation of designers. Setting
Arizona State University is the largest and the #1 most Innovative University in the Nation, the New American University. Located in the city of Tempe, ASU's main campus is an urban campus within the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Phoenix metro area is a region of 4.5 million people settled within the beauty of the Sonoran Desert and is the fastest growing city in the country. School Philosophy
The Design School's mission is to educate future designers to shape collaborations, synthesize complexity, and catalyze transformation for public good. Our faculty has depth in areas of architectural knowledge including design theory, urban design, sustainability, and the tectonics of practice. At the undergraduate level we seek to educate and prepare students for the profession of architecture, while at the graduate level we seek to educate and prepare students to transform the discipline of architecture. At key moments within both the undergraduate and graduate curricula, The Design School places an emphasis on transdisciplinary education and collaboration, both within and beyond our allied design disciplines.
Programs
Founded nearly 60 years ago, our accredited professional degree is the Master of Architecture degree. The M.Arch is commonly achieved in 2-years for students with a 4-year pre-professional degree, or in 3-years for students with a Bachelors degree in other fields of study. The undergraduate program begins by teaching design ITERATION in the lower-division, followed by teaching design and architectural INTEGRATION in the upper-division. The graduate program emphasizes design INNOVATION in the professional degree program, and disciplinary TRANSFORMATION in our post-professional degree programs. Transdisciplinary experiences are emphasized by the annual Cluster project at the undergraduate level and through our Global Engagement Studios at the graduate level.
