School Philosophy

The mission of NewSchool of Architecture & Design is to nurture and inspire design-minded students. Our philosophy is rooted in design thinking and we focus on preparation for practice and project based learning. We are an urban laboratory with a curriculum thats built on four educational pillars: 1) preparation for practice; 2) international reach; 3) sustainability and 4) urban engagement.

With a long history of providing leading architecture education, NewSchool of Architecture & Design is proud to announce that we are one of only 14 schools in the nation that have been accepted to participate in the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) initiative. Our philosophy is rooted in design thinking and we focus on preparation for practice and project based learning. We also emphasize regional approach to design in southern California. Our unique location provides our students an invaluable opportunity to be an integral part of the ever-evolving built environment of the city. We are an urban laboratory where each architecture student has their own studio space and an opportunity to work on projects with real clients and community organizations.

We work closely with the architecture and design firms and the industry in everything we do. We hire practicing professionals to teach our courses, we partner with leading architecture and design professionals to provide industry insights as advisory board members and we encourage our students to get involved with the professional design community while still in school.
