College of Architecture and Environmental Design Will Also Offer Numerous Events During Open House Weekend April 13-14
SAN LUIS OBISPO — A temporary city of unique, student-built shelters will spring up in Poly Canyon over Earth Day weekend, hosted by Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design.
One of the college’s largest and most-anticipated events, the annual Design Village competition draws hundreds of students to participate in Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing philosophy as they design, build and inhabit structures in Poly Canyon.
This year’s competition, which is free and open to the public, will be held April 20-22, to coincide with Earth Day. Designed by teams of students from across the country, submissions must be built in 12 hours or less, use off-the-grid electricity, and provide shelter to the team for the weekend.
The entries will be judged on their craftsmanship, sustainability, design excellence, suitability to the theme of “Balance,” and public response. A free shuttle service will be provided to Poly Canyon on Saturday, April 21, from the intersection of Village Drive and Truckee Road starting at 11 a.m., with continuous service every 20 minutes until 5 p.m.
The College of Architecture and Environmental Design will also welcome hundreds of new students, their families and the community to campus April 13-14 during Cal Poly’s Open House weekend.
