The civic duty to nurture all forms of life in Ahmedabad has fostered a city marked by the coexistence of disparate routines, species and lifestyles. This interconnectedness is fundamental in Indian ecology, which celebrates life in all of its diversity through the feminine principle of Prakriti - the source of all life; nature. This project builds on the Gandhian ideas of the importance of cultivating a healthy environment in support of all forms of life. In memorializing Gandhi, I turn attention to the creation of a healthy space for all species in Ramapir no Tekra, the largest slum community in Ahmedabad and adjacent to the Harijan Ashram. The Gandhi Memorial takes the shape of a disparate variety of programs through which all living beings will find a sense of healing.

This project will introduce a network of recycling within Ramapir no Tekra, with the initiative that these same measures may be implemented throughout the city in the future. In my role as designer, i will partner with the women of Ramapir no Tekra to embed the recycling process within the fabric of the city, giving them more power in designing the future urban contract between nature, the city, and all of its diverse species. Situated on Sherbourne Lanes, this careful infill approach reaches no higher than seven stories compared to a neighbouring 8 story apartment. Working on a site with an existing community, efficiency in construction and minimizing displacement was key. This informed the material selection — three main materials include precast concrete (panels and hollow core slabs), prefabricated CLT (panels and columns) and a layer of polycarbonate skin.

“Beginning with research into historical concrete structures and its formwork, the project started with an in-depth analysis of ‘Los Manantiales Restaurant’ of 1958 by Félix Candela in México DF. Through analysis and experimentation, a family of new forms and fabrications strategies specific to combinations of Candela’s work, allowed for new programs and site adaptations.
Interscape is a campus of 3 pavilion structures, each consisting of intersecting hyperbolic surfaces and hybrid conditions. The intersecting hypars create four interstitial spaces. All exterior / interior spaces are grouped together through multipole programs such as, skatable surfaces, roof gardens, amphitheaters and bridges.”

For this award, students throughout the Miami-Dade area submitted their projects and the jury, the AIA New Orleans chapter, selected the winner.

Here’s the jury’s feedback: “Drawing inspiration from Felix Candela’s Los Manantiales, this project draws inspiration from the past and applies new methodologies to hyperparabolic geometries. The submission shows clear research and process to create the new pavilion structures, which have an M.C. Escher like quality to them. The siting of the pavilions and the playful interaction with the site, which echoes the form of the pavilions, creates a sculptural landscape that begs to be explored and to hike up to find new vantage points.”

This project responds to the tension at Broadway Junction between the livelihood of its activity and the disorganization of its material presence. It traces an ecology of the neighborhood and seeks to expose, curate, and clarify the relationships that exist. By introducing the HRA program to the neighborhood, the project forms a public hub, drawing employees and other publics to the site. A park and a museum exhibition and collection program extend the public resources and qualities of the site -- it's spontaneous vegetation and the material production of the industrial zone. The building is almost entirely sunken underground to maximize open space and highlight the elevated train infrastructure above, suggesting a new agenda for development alongside aging infrastructure.
